Why Williamsburg still inspires us

Before Williamsburg became known around the world for its celebrated restaurants, independent boutiques, and creative studios, it was simply a neighborhood where people made things.

You can still feel that spirit today. It's found in converted factories that became artists' workshops, neighborhood cafés filled with quiet conversations, bookstores curated with intention, galleries tucked behind brick facades, and the countless independent businesses that continue to shape the character of the community. Creativity here isn't manufactured—it grows naturally from the people who choose to call Williamsburg home.
When we opened Shine Optique in Williamsburg in 2011, we weren't simply choosing a storefront. We were choosing to become part of a neighborhood that values craftsmanship over convenience, originality over imitation, and thoughtful design over passing trends.
Those values continue to guide everything we do.
They influence the independent eyewear brands we curate, the artisans we choose to work with, the precision we bring to every fitting, and the personalized care we believe every customer deserves. Just as Williamsburg celebrates makers who create with purpose, we're drawn to eyewear designed with the same philosophy—crafted to last, thoughtfully considered, and made for people who appreciate the details.
This Journal is an extension of that philosophy.

Here, we'll share the stories behind the makers, the craftsmanship inside the workshops, the knowledge we've gained through years of optical practice, and the neighborhoods and people that continue to inspire the way we see the world.
Along the way, we'll also feature our monthly Editor's Pick - the frame our team simply can't stop recommending - and our Customer Favorite, the style that found the most new homes that month.

Thank you for joining us as we celebrate the art of seeing - with curiosity, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for the independent spirit that first brought us to Williamsburg.
